Favorite Jan Brett books

by Jennifer Geary

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Last week my kids and I got to go hear children's author and illustrator Jan Brett speak, so today I'm going to share some of our favorite Jan Brett books and how we've used them for school.

  • Gingerbread Baby: If you're looking for some fun school for December, Gingerbread Baby (or Gingerbread Friends) is a terrific choice!  We've always used this for fun when we make gingerbread men, but Homeschool Share has a free unit you can use to really get into the story!

  • The Mitten: The Mitten is another great story to use with your little ones during the winter.  I'm looking forward to using it with my four year old daughter next month along with these great free printables from Homeschool Creations!

  • The Umbrella: If you're learning about the rainforest, The Umbrella would be a wonderful addition to your unit study.  I used it with my son when he was five and we really enjoyed it.  Making Learning Fun also has some fun activities to go along with it!

  • Berlioz the Bear: This is also a Reading Rainbow book, so check with your library to see if you can get the video!  When my children were learning about music and instruments last spring we all enjoyed reading about Berlioz.  Homeschool Share also has a free lapbook to go along with it!

Jan Brett has so many books that would be wonderful as either go-alongs or to base an entire unit study around!  If you visit her personal site, she offers games, coloring pages, activities, and free printables of all kinds to accompany her books, so planning something using her stories is so easy!
