This event and screening of “The Color of Care” is possible through the support of the Smithsonian and Picture Motion. The museum’s exhibits will not be open for this event.

Schedule:

5:30 p.m.

Community health organizations including Oklahoma City County Health Department, INTEGRIS, the Caring Van, YMCA, TSET, and others will be onsite to provide glucose, blood pressure, and eye screenings. The Oklahoma City Innovation District, St. Luke’s Community Market, and other community partners will be available to share fresh produce and health resources. Science Museum Oklahoma representatives will offer hands-on activities for the young and young at heart. Light refreshments will also be provided.

6:00 p.m.

“The Color of Care” will be screened in the museum’s auditorium. The film chronicles how people of color suffer from systemically substandard healthcare. COVID-19 exposed what had been long endured and understood: people of color do not receive the same level of care.

Produced by Ms. Winfrey’s Harpo Productions and directed by Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning director Yance Ford, the film traces the origins of racial health disparities to practices that began during slavery and continue today. Using moving personal testimony, expert interviews, and disturbing data the film reveals the impact of racism on health, serving as an urgent warning of what must be done to save lives.

Following the screening, Science Museum Oklahoma is delighted to welcome Dr. Angela Hawkins, OBGYN and founder of the Oklahoma Black Physicians Alliance to help facilitate conversation with the audience.
