Description
Pioneer Library System (PLS) invites community members to the 21st Annual Crowns Tea Cultural Celebration, an interactive and uplifting event honoring Black history and culture. This beloved celebration will take place on Sunday, February 22, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, located at 555 Elm Avenue in Norman.
Made possible through the generous support of the Norman Arts Council and the Friends of the Norman Public Library, this year’s event features a diverse panel of accomplished musicians, artists, and community voices exploring the role of joy in the Black experience.
For more than twenty years, the Norman Crowns Tea has brought the community together to celebrate heritage, storytelling, and cultural connection. The event is inspired by the book “Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats” by Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry and began as a tribute to the beauty, creativity, and cultural significance of Black women’s church hats.
Attendees can expect an engaging program filled with music, artistic expression, and thoughtful discussion from local leaders, including volunteer organizer Charolette Gordon.
“The choices I've made to be an active participant in my community were never thought of as creating a personal legacy,” said Gordon. “My volunteerism and career choices were all about making positive differences wherever I happened to be. I firmly believe that collaborative and collective works, whether in our families or communities, promote understanding and civility.
“If there is a legacy to be left behind, it is that everyone must do their part and use whatever talents they've been given to make our temporary space on earth a better place to be. If anyone notices a need and has the ability to fill that need, don't wait to be invited to have a seat at the table; just always have a folding chair ready, pull up, and take your rightful place to make the world a better place.
“I’m proud of the friendships I’ve made and maintained with people of different ages, ethnicities, financial backgrounds, education levels, and careers along the way.”
Community members can reserve “their cup of tea” in three ways. On February 8, physical tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at the African American Read-In at Norman Public Library East. Beginning February 9, physical tickets may be picked up at Norman Public Library East, Norman Public Library West, and the Library Lab. Online registration will also open on February 9 through the library’s website.
There is no cost to attend; however, registration and tickets are required. PLS encourages everyone to join in this celebration of culture, connection, and collective joy.
