MLK Day in OKC: Your Guide to Events & Activities




Martin Luther King, Jr. gave us many reasons to celebrate. Oklahoma City boasts several special events to honor the incredible historical figure. Below, find a list of special parades and celebration hosted in his honor on MLK Day. Then, find a list of other special activities for families to do on the school holiday.

Jan. 15 MLK Jr Day Celebrations

FREE Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration in Downtown Oklahoma City (various locations) features a parade, traditional Silent March, bell ringing ceremony, holiday program and job fair. Parade begins at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral, 127 NW 7th St.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration at Myriad Gardens (301 W Reno Ave) features an afternoon music, crafts, readings and soul food. Local Oklahoma singers will be onsite singing traditional and contemporary gospel music throughout the day. FREE to attend, $2 donation to participate in activities. 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Day Camps and Activities for Jan. 16

School's Out Break Camps at the Oklahoma City Zoo (2101 NE 50th St) features zoo tours, up-close animal visits, crafts and games for kids ages 4 – 11. Snacks provided, campers must bring their lunch. Preregister. Half day, $25; full day, $45. Half day, 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.; full day, until 5:15 p.m.

$1 Admission to Oklahoma WONDERtorium (308 W Franklin, Stillwater) with a donation of a snack to the Stillwater Weekend Sacks for Children Project. Click here for a list of suggested snack items. $1, plus snack. 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Devon Ice Rink at Myriad Gardens (301 W Reno Ave) is open from 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. $12, with skate rental; $8, without; $7 for members.

Hot Dog Skate at Skate Galaxy (5800 NW 36th St) includes basic skate rental, hotdog & drink. $6. 1 – 4 p.m.

Jan. 12

FREE 2nd Friday Norman Art Walk in the Norman Arts District (downtown Norman) features a monthly celebration of the arts in Norman. 6 – 9 p.m.

FREE LIVE on the Plaza in the Plaza District (1700 block of NW 16th St) features artists, live music, special events, local shopping and more on the second Friday of the month. 7 – 11 p.m.

Jan. 13

FREE See You Saturdays at the Oklahoma Hall of Fame (1400 Classen Dr) features themed experiences and learning opportunities for families to enjoy together including crafts and guided tours. All ages welcome. 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

FREE Story Time at Commonplace Books (1325 N Walker Ave) features a weekly story time with pastries and juice. 10:30 a.m.

FREE Diaper Dash Baby Crawl & Toddler Trot at the Yukon Community Center (2200 S Holly Ave, Yukon). Babies 6-14 months compete to see who can crawl a set distance in a timed event. Toddlers trot to see which baby can walk the fastest. Prizes award in three age categories. 10:30 a.m. – noon.

FREE Story Time with Mr. Steve at Barnes & Noble (540 Ed Noble Parkway, Norman) features a silly story time and coloring activity. 11 – 11:45 a.m.

Indian Taco Sale & Indie Market at the OK Choctaw Tribal Alliance (5320 S Youngs Blvd) features traditional Indian tacos and other native dishes as well as native vendors offering crafts and handmade goods. Free to attend. 11 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Explore It! at Sam Noble Museum (2401 Chautauqua Ave, Norman). Explore the what, why and how of the natural world. As a group, attendees will investigate, experiment and learn about the world around us. Free with admission. 11:30 a.m. - noon.

FREE Family Make + Take Art Project at Oklahoma Contemporary (3000 General Pershing Blvd) features an art-making project inspired by works of art on view at the museum. Projects are designed to be accessible and fun for visitors of all ages and all levels of art-making experience. All children must be accompanied by an adult. 1 – 4 p.m.

FREE Family Escape Room at the Mustang Library (1201 N Mustang Rd, Mustang). Follow the clues, solve the mystery and see if you have what it takes to get out before time runs out. Recommended for groups of 2-6 people, ages 6 and up. Preregister. 1 - 4 p.m.

Drop-In Art at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art (415 Couch Dr) features a tile art making project inspired by the Museum’s collections and exhibitions. All ages welcome, no registration required. 1 – 4 p.m.

Ice Princess Party at the MAC at Mitch Park (2733 Marilyn Williams Dr, Edmond) features a winter themed crafts and snack time. Preregister. For ages 4 & up. 2 - 4 p.m.

Frozen Nose Series 5K Races at Wiley Post Park (2021 S Robison Ave) features a 5K race, food, music and more. $30. 2 p.m.

Winter Olympics Expo at Devon Ice Rink (301 W Reno Ave) features ice skating, music from DJ Brian Smith with muttradio.com, face painting, Olympic sports demonstrations, food trucks and more. Preregister. Kids (4-10): members, $12; nonmembers, $15; adults, $8. 4 - 8 p.m.

Jan. 13 - 15

Food Drive at the Oklahoma City Zoo (2101 NE 50th St). Zoo guests bringing at least one food item from the list below will receive half off admission (a $5.50 value for adults; $4 value for kids and seniors). Benefits the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma’s Food for Kids School Pantry Program. 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Jan. 14

Family Skate Night at Skate Galaxy (5800 NW 36th St) includes skate rental, pizza and drinks for up to 5 family members. $29. 6 - 8 p.m.
