3 reasons to visit OKCMOA this spring

by Erin Page

Reading Time: 3 minutes

The Oklahoma City Museum of Art is always on my list for days the kids are out of school. I love 1) the flexibility — depending on our schedule, we could spend 30 minutes or several hours, 2) the educational value and 3) the price — kids 17 and under always get in FREE!

This month, check out these 3 reasons to visit OKCMOA!

  1. See Preston Singletary: Raven and the Box of Daylight before it closes on April 28. This exhibit is unlike anything we have experienced at OKCMOA before. The multisensory experience uses art, storytelling and music to tell the story of Raven, a creator figure in Northwest Coast Native American culture, who was the giver of the stars, moon and sun.Singletary is famed for his unique glass pieces, and I lost track of the number of times we studied pieces throughout and marveled that they didn’t even look like glass! His use of Pacific Northwest Indigenous art to honor his ancestral Tlingit heritage provides a unique opportunity for kids to experience cultural stories and traditions. Rather simply than walking through the exhibit, we felt like we were actually inside the story being told. The artwork itself is mesmerizing but it’s the immersive experience that really sets this exhibit apart.

After seeing Raven, we enjoyed visiting the Chihuly gallery to compare and contrast Chihuly’s style of glassblowing and the differing formats of the exhibits.

  2.  Be one of the first to view Magnificent Beauty: Georgia O’Keeffe and the Art of the Flower. Starring famed artist O’Keeffe, the exhibit opens March 9 and will be on display through July 7. O’Keeffe redefined the tradition of floral still-life painting by incorporating techniques of photography (a relatively new medium in the early 20th century) into her works, choosing to depict the subject cropped and at close range to focus on color and form.Guests will have the opportunity to compare and contrast O’Keeffe’s style with Imogen Cunningham’s, who also portrayed flowers in close-up but whose photographs call attention to the play of light and shadow as well as the subject’s intricate details.
  3. Check out the new Family Space! OKCMOA recently opened a brand new space just for kids and families. Located on the first floor, the Family Space is a vibrant, comfortable room where kids can let their imaginations run wild. At one end, drawing horses set up with large sketch pads face a landscape painting with prompts and drawing instructions. Another station includes mirrors and prompts for creating a self-portrait. Visitors can also create rainbow-hued hangings to add to the colorful space. Comfy seating and books round out the room.My trio spent more than 30 minutes exploring all the things to do, choosing activities and creating. Don’t miss this fabulous addition on your next visit!

Kids 17 and under continue to receive free admission to OKCMOA every day. New in 2024, adults also get in free on the second Sunday of each month.
