Pioneer Library System invites you to learn more about Growing Like a Read (GLAR) and grow with your family. GLAR helps families build the foundation for a lifetime of learning by supporting early literacy and healthy brain development from birth to age 5. Through the simple, everyday activities of reading, talking, singing, playing, and learning together, parents and caregivers can help children develop the essential pre-reading skills they need before starting school.
The program focuses on six key early literacy skills: phonological awareness, letter knowledge, narrative skills, vocabulary, print awareness, and print motivation.
GLAR is woven into every Pioneer Library System Story Time and Early Literacy event, making it easy for families to learn together while having fun. Participants receive a free tote bag filled with resources designed to continue learning at home, including a stand-up book of rhymes, songs, finger plays, and activities, a children’s book to add to their home library, access to bilingual Songs & Rhymes/Canciones y Rimas YouTube playlists, and additional school readiness materials.
Getting started is simple. Contact your local Pioneer Library System library to join the program, attend a Story Time or Early Literacy event, or explore the virtual GLAR resources from home. By spending just 20 minutes each day reading, talking, singing, and playing together, families can help nurture a love of learning and set children on the path toward lifelong success.
