Touch a Truck, one of our favorite events in the metro, is coming up next weekend! Held each year at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds in Norman, Touch a Truck raises funds to benefit the children’s section of the Norman Public Library, a place very near and dear to my heart.
If you’ve never been to Touch a Truck before, you know pretty much everything you need to know just from the name. There are numerous trucks—and just about every other kind of vehicle you can think of—there and kids can touch them all—and pretend to drive them, honk the horns, push all the buttons, turn on the sirens, and everything else they can think of. If you have a child who doesn’t do well with lots of commotion or noise, there is a special quiet hour from 8:30 to 9:30 and then everything gets a little louder from 9:30 until noon.
If you’ve never been to the children’s section at the Norman library, you need to change that soon. Ms. Susan and Ms. Kim are absolutely fabulous. They know their books and they know their kids. They offer so many wonderful programs from storytimes to music classes to after school groups and are so welcoming to all families, no matter where their kids go to school. Touch a Truck has a suggested $2 donation per child and that money is used to purchase supplies for the children’s section.
Since this is a homeschooling blog, you know I’m going to bring up something educational, right? Yep. Here are some ideas of how you can tie Touch a Truck into your school time next week!
Transportation Preschool Pack: Homeschool Creations has a great printable pack covering all kinds of transportation. There are also links to books and crafts.
Mr. Gumpy: Mr. Gumpy’s Outing and Mr. Gumpy’s Motor Car are both fun books! There are lots of fun things to do with Mr. Gumpy’s Motor Car, even for little ones and there is a free unit study and lapbook for Mr. Gumpy’s Outing at Homeschool Share.
Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel: My son loved this book and I’ll probably bring it out again to read for fun. If you want to do more, there is an entire unit study available (for free) at Homeschool Share!
Transportation Fun at Pinterest: Can you do a unit without Pinterest? Probably, but what fun would that be?! This is a great board with ideas for all ages and all kinds of vehicles.
Transportation and Vehicle Ideas: Check out the Transportation theme page at Making Learning Fun for all kinds of ideas for younger learners. Homeschool Share has a great Vehicles Connections page with unit studies and links for all ages.
