Summer Goals for Me

by Jennifer Geary

Reading Time: 2 minutes

I've shared the plans I have for my kids over the summer, but I've also been busy making plans for myself! Honestly, I make plans for myself every summer, but I rarely write them down and they get lost in the shuffle and before I know it, Labor Day is here and I haven't accomplished half of them.

This year I'm going to do my best to put some dates with my goals and hopefully that will help me along.

  • Reading:  I love to read, but due to time constraints, I don't get to spend nearly as much time reading as I would like. This summer I want to read at least three "mom" books—books that will be encouraging and motivating as I'm making plans for the regular school year. I'd also like to read at least three books just for fun. Thanks to my weakness for buying books, there's already plenty to choose from on my shelves!

  • Planning: I make a lot of plans in my head, but I've never been good about getting them down on paper, so sometimes we don't get to all of the things I would like to. Next fall I'll have a kindergartner and a fifth grader. This will be the first time I've taught both grades before, so I have a little better idea in my head of how I want the year to go and when I want to cover certain topics. I would like to have my son's novel studies mapped out for the year before we start again in the fall and a skeleton outline at least for my daughter's unit studies.  A few years ago I had the first semester's unit studies completely planned out for my son ahead of time and that was the best thing ever.  I am looking forward to that feeling again!

  • Organizing: I am possibly the world's worst organizer. Piles are my specialty, and they are frequently out of hand. I'm not under the illusion that I'm going to do anything this summer that's going to remedy the problem once and for all, but I'm going to try to get some good work in on some problem areas of the house so that at least we're not starting the school year off in the hole as far as the house goes.

In addition, I want to have a good time enjoying my children and spending time with friends. Even though the heat seems to go on forever, the rest of summer flies by and I want to make the most of it!
