Strong Together Fall 2014—Week 1

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Welcome to Week 1 of our Strong Together Training Program! We are so excited that you are sharing this fitness journey with us and we look forward to providing you with the tools and expertise that you need to get fit.

We are excited about kicking off Week 1, and we hope you are, too!

Here's a welcome from Coach Sara:

Hello to all!
For those who were not able to attend the informational meetings, allow me to introduce myself and fill you in on some of the program information. My name is Sara McCauley with runhers. I am a RRCA Certified Running Coach and NASM Personal Trainer. Each week I will provide the training information and tips to ensure you are successful in completing your 5K goal. I am thrilled to get this going and can't wait to see what each one of you will accomplish through this process!

The Sofa2Success 8-week plan will start tomorrow, Monday, August 25. You can print the schedule on the runhers website, or by clicking here. Sheila Kidder, runhers Director of Special Events, will lead a Strong Together group run Saturday mornings. The group will meet at Stars and Stripes Park (3701 S Lake Hefner Drive, Oklahoma City) in the south parking lot at 7am sharp. Please allow yourself time for announcements and questions. Sheila will have signs out to direct you, water on the route and energy when you're lacking! This might sound early for some, but I promise you'll be so glad you did it once you are finished!

You are responsible for weekly runs on your own, however our hope is to connect participants who are located in similar areas, so that you keep each other accountable during the week and make friends along the way.

The great thing about running is all you really have to do is throw on a pair of good shoes and you're out the door. The only purchase I suggest you really need to make (after race registration of course) is the right pair of running shoes. I cannot stress the significance of having the proper shoe that's fitted to your foot type. It's an investment that will keep you comfortable and injury-free crossing that finish line! There are a lot of nice, high dollar gadgets and accessories in the running industry that can be very overwhelming. While they are all fun and can assist you later on, these are not things you must have to get started.

As you begin the program this week, just remember to start slowly. You are building a base the first couple of weeks. Focus on this week alone, not what you have to do in six weeks. You are training to be a better you each day. Changes happen over time, not overnight, so be patient and have trust in yourself (and your ability) to see this through.

You're going to be great!

So, your "To-Do's" for this week are:

  1. Follow the Week 1 schedule in the Sofa2Success training plan
  2. Join the Strong Together Facebook group
  3. Post any questions or concerns that you may have to this group and/or arrange to meet up with other participants in your area if you want to train with others.
  4. Be on the lookout for more information on our website about our new Strong Together bloggers that include "Extreme Weight Loss" star Georgeanna Johnson, Christina Mushi, Piper Riggs, and Shannon Snow!
  5. It's never too late to invite someone! Sign up a friend here.

Although we want you to register for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5K as soon as possible, we are waiting for the code that will provide you with $10 off registration. We'll send this as soon as we have it. We're also still researching about t-shirts so stay tuned for that information.
