Steger, Party of 6: The Drum Room

Friends, if Western Avenue isn’t on your list of go-to districts, remedy that with a trip to The Drum Room. Our family frequents this dive often when the need for chicken and fries arises (and with kids, that’s often, am I right?). It happens to be within walking distance to our home, but we would make the drive if we had to because all six of us love it that much. The atmosphere and decor are fun and funky (look up…the lights are drums!) and the staff is always kind and attentive to my kids.

The Drum Room is technically a bar, but we’ve never had an issue with noise or crowds during weekend lunch or weeknight dinner hours. There are plenty of TVs always tuned to sports, high-top tables, as well as booths and tables that can be pushed together for a large group. We’ve taken my in-laws here for lunch and they loved it, as well.

I’m guessing most patrons lean toward the Drum Stix, Drummies (wings), or Fried Chicken (half or whole bird), but I’ve got picky people (notice I didn’t say kids…) who don’t like to eat chicken on the bone, so here’s how we navigate the menu: If we’re there during the week, odds are pretty good that we’ll order off the happy hour menu, which includes half-price Stix, wings and nachos (as well as drink specials). We grab the chicken nachos (only $5) to keep the kids happy while we wait for our chicken to be fried. I’m honestly not sure they have a kids menu (though they have coloring sheets), but pretty much everything is kid-friendly food and easily split.

Our family always shares three chicken tender platters, which gives us more than enough chicken as well as three sides, always fries, always a waffle and always (for me) okra. I can almost forget there’s chicken to be eaten when they put that perfectly crispy (and salty!) okra in front of me. Add yourself a side of gravy. You can thank me later. We always get out under our $40 limit and we always leave with bellies full. Follow The Drum Room on Facebook, because they often announce specials they’re running on holidays and game days.

The Drum Room may not have been on your radar before, but trust me when I say you won’t regret checking it out soon!
