“If, every day, I dare to remember that I am here on loan, that this house, this hillside, these minutes are all leased to me, not given, I will never despair.” -Erica Jong
I don’t know about you, but for me it is really pretty easy to be disappointed, to despair. Whether it’s the pressures of work, home, finances or relationships, it seems there is always something trying to reach out and drag us down.
I came across the quote above during one such time. It seemed there was something going wrong simultaneously in every category in my life! One of the things I do when I feel this way is to read encouraging things that help me to reorder my outlook.
When you are discouraged, it is easy to feel as if it will last forever. For some reason, tough times often seem to last longer than the good ones. Yet when you consider the power of this quote, it can truly be life changing.
The reality is that whatever we are currently worried about, stressed over, or overwhelmed by, is a temporary problem that will not last forever. It’s true, because we ourselves are temporary, we are all here for but a brief time on loan. Our homes, families, jobs, cars and very lives are only leased to us, because in the end we will have to give it all back.
Try to place your current concerns in the larger context of your entire life. Your problems won’t last forever and each moment of life is a tremendous gift. With the Easter season upon us, let the renewing of the seasons bring a fresh perspective that energizes you and causes you to live the quality of life you can only have when you recognize you really are just on loan.
