Norman Public Library opens pop-up community place

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Pioneer Library System is opening a Pop-Up Community Place intended to supplement library services for residents during the closure of Norman Public Library Central at 103 W Acres Street. The temporary location, named Library Lab, is located at 121 S Santa Fe Avenue Suite 119 in Norman, just south of Main Street and .7 miles from Norman Public Library Central, and will offer many popular library services.

“We are excited to experiment with this new boutique-style library concept to serve our community until we are safely back in our Central location,” said PLS Executive Director Lisa Wells. “Our strategic plan outlines reimagining the library, and we are proud to be doing just that in the face of an unfortunate situation.”

Maker equipment at the new location will include two Prusa XL 3D printers and three mini 3D printers, a 3D scanner, laser cutter, embroidery machine, Mobile Sound Lab and video equipment. Staff will be on-site during operating hours to help customers design, create and make.

The location will also offer DVD and Blu-ray titles through a brand-new Movie Box machine, along with Book Lockers where library customers can pick up requested items. Internet access will be available for personal devices with 1 GB of Wi-Fi.

Library Lab will be open Monday through Friday from 10 am to 7 pm, Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm, and Sundays from 1 pm to 6 pm. All Norman Central Children’s programming (apart from Family Yoga at The Well) will be held at the Pop-Up Community Place. Adult and Teen programming will continue to be held across the community and at other PLS libraries.

The Norman Public Library Central branch closed in November of last year to undergo mold remediation. Updates on the project can be found on the City of Norman website.
