Community Health Centers of Oklahoma’s Mary Mahoney Memorial Health Center offers a free screening program called NOW (Navigating Our Women) that provides free and low-cost breast cancer screenings for the uninsured and medically underserved. Through a grant awarded by Susan G. Komen® Central and Western Oklahoma, the NOW program offers patient’s a navigator that guides them through screening mammograms, referrals for diagnostic follow up and treatment including eligibility for other assistance programs.
The grant will provide a total of 250 free screening mammograms to women ages 40 – 49 and 65 and older who are not otherwise eligible for state and/or federally funded programs in Oklahoma County.
To increase awareness and encourage more women to take charge of their health, the center is hosting My Sister, Myself events. During their event last October, nearly 20 women received mammograms and were entered into a drawing to win a pair of free OKC Thunder Tickets, donated by Rep. Jason Lowe.
The next My Sister, Myself event is scheduled for Tuesday, February 13 from 5 – 7 p.m. This event is being planned with the whole family in mind. There will be more free giveaways as well as vendors, a reading activity for kids with Metropolitan Library System and food truck to help make the event more convenient for women to attend.
Transportation by a Community Health van can also be arranged. Interested women should call 769-3301 ext. 1215 for more information.
