When my son was little, one of our favorite things to do was to go to zoo classes at the OKC Zoo. He loved to learn about the different animals at the zoo and any day with a zoo class was always a good day! When we moved back to Broken Arrow we still kept our OKC Zoo membership, but unfortunately it hasn't worked with our schedule for my daughter to participate in the zoo classes until last week. She enjoyed it so much! In case you haven't tried out one of the zoo classes, I want to share a few things you need to know about them!
Teachers: All of the teachers in the zoo's education department have been absolutely terrific! They are patient and kind and work to include all of the children in the class. They are prepared and knowledgeable and make the whole class a wonderful experience!
Activities: Each class is based on a specific theme, such as a certain animal or different animals with a common trait. There is usually a circle time, a craft, some kind of hands-on activity or an animal visitor, and then a snack. The class wraps up with a visit to the zoo grounds to see the animals from the class. We've done the classes for two year olds up to five year olds and they've always been interesting and just right for the age group.
Price: At $15 (or less if you're a zoo member), these classes are a great deal! You've got experts there to answer all those animal questions your kids ask you that you have no idea how to answer–and they can do it at your child's level, too. When you throw in the snack, the craft, and the admission to the zoo, the classes are a bargain!
This spring the OKC Zoo is offering several different homeschool classes for kids from Pre-K to 6th grade. We have never tried these before, but we're planning on attending at least one of them. Based on all our other experiences, I know we're going to have a great time! If you haven't tried these classes before, check out the spring offerings and give them a try. I know you'll have fun and learn something new!
