Celebrating the Season: My Favorite Halloween & Día de los Muertos Traditions

by Valeria Loper

Reading Time: 3 minutes

The fall season brings a special kind of magic to our home in celebrating Halloween and Día de los Muertos. From creative DIY decorations to cozy family movie nights filled with the best Halloween movies for kids, and meaningful traditions honoring our loved ones on Day of the Dead, there’s so much to embrace this vibrant time of year. Here are my 3 favorite ways to embrace this vibrant time of year!

  1. Creative DIY Decorations

One of my absolute favorite parts of this season is getting creative with our Halloween decorations. With a household that includes four daughters, it only made sense to give our skeletons bows! I love how this has added a playful touch to our home, and these cheerful decorations set the perfect mood for welcoming friends and family.

We love enjoying others’ creative decorations, too, by taking evening walks around our neighborhood to enjoy the Halloween lights, pumpkins and decor. This is an easy, no-cost way to spend quality time together and enjoy some movement.

  1. Family Movie Nights with the best Halloween movies for kids

As the weather cools down, it’s the perfect time for cozy family movie nights. Turning on a Halloween movie for kids is another free family fun experience! We gather up the blankets and choose a movie that captures the spirit of the season.

  1. Honoring Día de los Muertos

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, holds a special place in my heart. It’s a beautiful time to remember and celebrate loved ones who have passed and to have conversations with our children about family traditions. Families can create an ofrenda (altar) with photos of ancestors, flowers and even their favorite foods. This tradition is not only about remembering, it’s also a celebration of life, love and family.

Local Día de los Muertos events offer additional opportunities to honor this special day.

As we embrace the magic of this season, I hope these traditions inspire your family to celebrate in meaningful ways. Whether through creative decorations, cozy movie nights with Halloween movies for kids or honoring loved ones, I wish you plenty of moments to connect and create lasting memories together.
