Laura Himes and Angela Polk founded Kismet Arts Studio & Theatre in 2016 with 30 students and two faculty members. Ten years later, the studio has grown to more than 250 students, 16 faculty, and over 20 contract hires per year.
“Our mission is to inspire, engage, and challenge audiences with theatrical productions ranging from the classics to new works,” says Himes. “We’re dedicated to training theatre artists and providing arts education that promotes life-long learning for a diverse community.”
Class offerings include dance, acting, voice, performing arts, stage combat, and on-camera work. Kismet also hosts Kindermusik classes and welcomes guest artists from across the country.
“Since opening, we’ve produced over 100 productions and entertained an estimated 50,000 patrons,” says Polk.
As an inclusive organization that celebrates students of all abilities, Kismet Arts centers its values on creating safe environments, promoting artistic excellence, and treating everyone with dignity.
“Mutual respect and kindness drives every relationship we pursue,” says Himes. “We also maintain a high production standard that makes every student, ages 4 to 18, feel their show is special.”
Now in a permanent home in Fusion at Oakdale off I-35 and Hefner Road, the studio has become a fixture in the community.
“We’re happy to be a solid part of Oakdale and will continue to serve the school and district with classes, internship opportunities, and community partnerships,” says Polk.
Enthusiastic demand has pushed Kismet Arts to expand its summer programming to 12 camps — ranging from three days to two weeks — with more than 200 students expected to attend. The growth has also led to partnerships with larger facilities to accommodate both students and audiences.
After a pause during the pandemic, Kismet Arts reinstated its community theatre productions in 2025. This summer, the studio presents Shrek the Musical, July 10-12 at Oakdale School. These phenomenal shows offer students, semi-professionals and community performers a place to shine. For more information, visit kismetartsokc.com.
