Finding Educational Treasure at Local Consignment Sales

by Jennifer Geary

Reading Time: 2 minutes

If you've been a mom for more than a year or so, you've probably visited one of the big consignment sales in the area. Consignment sales are a great way to save some money on clothes for your kids, but they can also be a great place to find items for homeschooling! Some of my favorite things to look for at consignment sales:

Curriculum: Many of the larger consignment sales have specific sections for homeschool curriculum now. Bring a list of anything specific you want to look for, or if you've wanted to see something in person before you make a purchase, this may be your chance. I've found some good buys on pieces of large curriculum sets before, so I think it's worth the time to look through the area.

Books: Just like with clothing, it helps to be familiar with prices if there are specific things you're looking for, especially if you're looking for an out of print or hard to find title. There are usually tons of books at the bigger sales, so I just flip through and look for titles I'm already familiar with. If you have independent readers, this might be a good time for them to pick some books on their own without having to empty their piggy banks!

Games and Puzzles:  We've gotten some of our favorite learning games and puzzles at consignment sales. You do run the risk of missing pieces, but if the price is low enough, I'm willing to give it a try. I figure that even if we can't play the game, we can always use the pieces to make our own!

Playtime Goodies: Don't forget that play is a huge part of learning for your little ones! Look for costumes, play food, blocks, and other staples that are usually easy to find for a good price at the sales.

Crafts: I always check through the craft section for things we can use for snowy days.  Sometimes I can find some cool things I know my kids won't use enough for me to be willing to pay retail, but for the cheaper price, I'll give it a try!
