Features a screening of the film Blackbird followed by a panel discussion on the critical topic of mental health in underrepresented communities. In the film, Alma, a young black teenager recovering from Bulimia meets Noa, her new roommate at an eating disorder treatment center. Seemingly, the two could not be more different, yet they will soon find they have more in common than they realize. Based on a true story, Blackbird tells the narrative of hope, trauma recovery, and truth through finding connection.

Project Blackbird, a nonprofit initiative, aims to turn the film Blackbird into a much larger conversation about the stigmas and discrepancies in mental health care—specifically regarding eating disorders and mental health challenges in communities of color. With over 10,200 people in the U.S. dying annually as a direct result of an eating disorder, it’s vital to break down the barriers that prevent open conversations about mental health.

The project highlights a striking statistic: Black teenagers are 50% more likely than white teenagers to engage in bulimic behaviors, but are half as likely to receive treatment. This event hopes to shine a light on these stark disparities and encourage vulnerability and understanding around these issues.

The screening will be followed by a panel featuring key voices in the film and mental health advocacy, including:

• Alexandra Miles – CEO and Founder of Project Blackbird Inc., producer, actor, and mental health advocate
• Kendra Williams – Actor in Blackbird, mental health advocate within African-American communities
• Rachael Vaughn – Filmmaker and survivor of trauma, now focusing her storytelling on healing
• Jordan Martin – Director of Blackbird, an Oklahoma City filmmaker focused on powerful narratives
