Cuddles for a good cause: Cat Cafe opens in OKC

Weโ€™re not kitten โ€” OKCโ€™s new Donโ€™t Stress Meowt Cat Cafe is the purr-fect place to enjoy the double bonusย of fun and a mental health boost! The Cafe opened in May 2023 to serve up coffee, cocktails, snacks and merch โ€” plus cat cuddles with adoptable feline friends.

The purpose of the lounge is to socialize and positively enrich cats available for adoption through Safe Haven Animal Rescue. Since the Cafe opened, more than two dozen kitties have found their fur-ever homes.

Mental wellness is an added benefit for the human visitors and a top priority for owner Michaela Fitzpatrick, a licensed clinical social worker who operates a private counseling practice. In the middle of a wild work week, I could literally feel the tension leave my body as my daughter and I giggled at playful kitty antics and petted our new feline friends. Some of the cats wanted to play with the toys and laser pointers, others were content to nap and still others just wanted to be loved on.

Guests can visit anytime during operating hours for drinks or tasty treats, with a full view of the Cat Lounge through a glass partition. We highly recommend the cookie sammy, which are gluten-free.

If you want to enjoy those cat cuddles in the Lounge, make an advance hour-long reservation for $15 per person. And the reservations book up pretty far in advance, so plan accordingly. You can also add on tokens for the kitty treat machine, which was a hilarious addition to our visit. As soon as you drop in a token, you are surrounded by mew-ing pals circling your legs!

A dozen or more cats and kittens call the Cat Lounge home at a time, and they are free to choose when and how they want to socialize with the human visitors. Via a raised walkway, the cats can exit the Cat Lounge for a room where their food and litter boxes (and some respite from all those humans!) are found.

In addition to helping kitties find homes, the Cafe donates $1 from every lounge visit to their local nonprofit of the month. More than $1,000 was donated to Oklahoma City Public Schools Foundation in May.

There is no minimum age to visit, but guests under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Be prepared to take off your shoes to visit the Cat Lounge — you can wear your own or they have socks available. Donโ€™t Stress Meowt Cat Cafe is open Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. Food is prepared off-site and is not allowed within the Cat Lounge. Make reservations to visit the Cat Lounge at dontstressmeowt-catcafe.com.
