Make This Summer Count with Pioneer Library System’s Summer Learning Challenge

By Pioneer Library System

Reading Time: 2 minutes

What if just 20 minutes a day could change your entire summer and make a lasting impact in your community?

Pioneer Library System (PLS) invites readers and learners of all ages to take part in the Summer Learning Challenge (SLC) 2026, launching May 1. Designed for children, teens, and adults alike, the program encourages participants to read, explore, and stay curious all summer long while working together toward a shared goal: 20 million minutes of learning.

At its core, SLC is simple. Spend 20 minutes a day reading, listening, or learning something new. Those minutes add up quickly, and participants who stay consistent can complete the program in about 50 days, well within the summer window. But more importantly, those daily moments help build confidence, spark curiosity, and create lasting learning habits.

Getting started is easy. Participants can sign up through the PLS Connect app or online, then begin logging their minutes right away. Every minute spent reading a book, listening to an audiobook, attending a library program, or exploring a new skill earns points. The goal is to reach 1,000 points by the end of the summer, with milestone prizes available along the way at local library branches.

And if summer gets busy? No problem. Minutes can be logged retroactively, making it easy to stay on track and keep progressing toward your goal.

While SLC is a fun and rewarding way to stay engaged, it also serves a bigger purpose. When the community collectively reaches 20 million minutes of learning, the Pioneer Library System Foundation will donate books to children enrolled in WIC programs across the region. Every minute logged helps place books into the hands of families, building home libraries and expanding access to literacy resources where they’re needed most.

For children and teens, SLC is a powerful tool to prevent the “summer slide,” the learning loss that can happen when school is out. Studies show that students who stay engaged in learning during the summer return to the classroom more confident and prepared. Even a small daily commitment can make a measurable difference.

But the program isn’t just for students. Adults are encouraged to participate as well, embracing lifelong learning while contributing to the community goal. Whether it’s picking up a new hobby, attending a program, or finally diving into a long-awaited book, every minute counts.

As summer unfolds, SLC becomes more than just a personal goal. It’s a shared effort that connects families, neighbors, and communities through learning.

This year, make summer more than just a break. Make it an opportunity to grow, explore, and give back.

Because at PLS adventure, and impact, starts with just 20 minutes a day. Sign up today at pioneerlibrarysystem.org/summer-learning-challenge.
