30 Day Mom Challenge Day 26 – Make it a point to encourage your child today.

Encouragement. It’s more than just something we do when our kids are trying something new.

Every day on the way to school we tackle this one. Every day I encourage them to be their best … to use good judgment … to be kind to others … to help someone in need … to have compassion … to take a deep breath and regroup when it seems that nothing is going their way.

If character is built when we are forced to face difficult situations, and I believe that it is, then it’s my job as a parent to encourage my children to make good choices and choose to do the right thing.

I have one kid on the cusp of tweendom, and it seems like the days where our time after school is fraught with disagreement and foul moods are becoming the norm instead of the exception. But I encourage him to work out those emotions in a way that doesn’t hurt others; while it’s okay to be grumpy, it’s not okay to be rude. I encourage him to find constructive ways to deal with his anger or frustration, while relating my understanding for what he’s going through.

I encourage my children to do their best in every situation; that their reward for a job well done is the satisfaction of seeing the end result of hard work. And I remind them that every day is a new opportunity to try their best again.
