Oklahoma City family fun can feel like it's a long time coming.
Spring is here but this weekend's forecast calls for rain and storms. After days of sunshine and peak temperatures at 80+ degrees, we were settling into a comfortable evening routine with park visits and walks. Last night's cold wind sent us indoors for jackets. Tomorrow's rain won't let us be outside again and a lot of activities in our community have already canceled.
So what's a family to do with no spring fun in sight? Here are four free activities that don't require good weather.
- Visit your local library for new finds: All indoor events all the time make the library an ideal place to spend an afternoon. If you haven't checked out the latest in library offerings lately with six digital resources, see our April article here. Books are great, of course, but they offer so much more than what you'd assume is around. There's also a class on germinating seeds tomorrow at the downtown library that's free, one of many events you can count on happening rain or shine.
- Swap out your toy boxes and create an art corner: If you've been putting off spring cleaning, this weekend might be the perfect chance to get some out of the way. What's great about that for your kids is rediscovering what they used to love. Still bored? Create an art corner, make homemade play dough and give your children a space that's theirs to create.
- Find a museum to visit: Oklahoma Contemporary's Second Saturday Drop-In Studio is offered without charge. What I like about this event is that it's an afternoon session so our morning can still be really chill at home or we can get something else done in the day; it's 1 to 4 p.m. If you're willing to spend some discretionary cash, check out this list of current museum exhibitions.
- Plan your summer: It seems like there's never enough time to just sit down and decide what's on the agenda for the next couple of months. I know some families keep a calendar with each family member's schedule but time to plan a road trip or line out who's going to which summer camp is hard to come by, especially once summer actually starts. Find MetroFamily's Summer Camps Guide here. If you're looking to plan a day trip, check out Exploring Oklahoma with Children, an editorial series that outlines the finer points of family attractions throughout our state.
If all else fails, you can take in a movie. I think that's our plan this weekend. Although this very rainy year has left me wanting more sunshine, I know it will be here soon. In the meantime, I'm just going to make my own Mother's Day plans and try to get some extra rest before we're all off to the park again and the swimming pool after that.
See you outside soon enough!
