Museum Fun with Kids

To wrap up these posts for Museum Month, I want to share with you two great museum experiences we've had recently that you may want to take part in with your family!

A couple of weeks ago my kids (ages 5 and 10) participated in a homeschool class on Andy Warhol and printmaking at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. Over the last couple of years I have looked at the different homeschool classes the museum offers, but because they were multi-session classes I couldn't bring myself to commit since we live a couple of hours away. When I found out they were going to offer single session classes I was so excited! I love it when venues listen to their visitors.

We tried out the printmaking class that went along with the Andy Warhol exhibit currently at the museum. Between our artist study and hearing Andy Warhol's nephew speak about him, my kids already knew a fair amount about him and his art, but the pieces themselves were new to them and they really enjoyed the exhibit and the class. We started out by going to the exhibit and learning a bit about the process Warhol went through as he completed his works.  There were kids from 5 years old up to probably 13 or so, and the teacher did a great job of engaging them all! We worked puzzles of the different works and also read one of James Warhola's books about his uncle. Back in the classroom, we got to do our own screen printing project! I was really excited about this because I wanted to try it before, but I really wasn't sure how to go about doing it. My kids both enjoyed it and it was really interesting to see the process in action.  There are plenty of classes for kids and families scheduled over the coming months, so I would definitely encourage you to check the schedule and give them a try if you haven't already.

If you're up for a road trip, Crystal Bridges currently has an amazing exhibit called Van Gogh to Rothko: Masterworks from the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.  It's about a 3.5-4 hour trip from Oklahoma City to Bentonville, but this collection is well worth the drive! This exhibit includes lots of "big name" artists, including Van Gogh, Picasso, Dali, O'Keeffe, Kahlo, Warhol, and Rothko. That's a lot of famous artists in one exhibit! We've studied most of these artists, either through our artist studies at home or in art classes the kids have done, so it was really cool to see some of these works in person. And of course, the regular collections at Crystal Bridges are amazing themselves, so a road trip is definitely in order. If you want to know more details of what there is to do at the museum, be sure to check out this Exploring Oklahoma article to see all you can enjoy there.

I hope that these recent posts have encouraged you to get out and enjoy some of our great museums with your family!
