Have an Art Adventure!

by Sara Riester

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Story time. Art. Indoor activity. FREE! What more could you ask for in the chilly month of January?

The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art offers Art Adventures every Tuesday morning at 10:30am. This program is geared towards children ages 3-5 with an adult. Children begin on the story time rug listening to a classic children’s book. They then move on to a simple art project related to the story they just heard. Art Adventures is a great hands-on program for children to explore their creativity and expand their minds. Some of the projects can be a little messy, so be sure your kids dress for a mess or at least don’t wear something you would be sorry to get paint on.

If you happen to attend an Art Adventures program during the months of February, March or April, you might consider staying later to hear a Tuesday Noon Concert (which is also FREE!). Faculty and students from the OU School of Music perform short 30-minute concerts throughout the school year. It is a great way to introduce music to young children who have trouble staying still and quiet for longer periods of time. On nice days, my children and I have packed a picnic lunch to eat at one of the many scenic places on campus before returning to enjoy a concert. It is a lovely way to spend the day while exposing young children to high quality art and music.
