This past week, I had the wonderful opportunity to see Wicked, presented by Celebrity Attractions, at the Civic Center Music Hall. My hubby and I managed to cobble together last-minute childcare and headed out for a rare date night.
Wicked is the story of what happened in the Land of Oz prior to Dorothy’s arrival by a Kansas twister. It tells of Glinda and Elphaba as they navigate an unlikely friendship at school and the events that lead to them becoming Glinda the Good Witch of the North and the Wicked Witch of the West amidst politics, conspiracy and the meanings of good and evil.
The music is beautifully written, the sets and costumes are breathtaking, and the acting and singing is phenomenal. You will not be disappointed.
Wicked makes for a fantastic date night or a family outing for families with older children who enjoy theatre and can sit through a production that runs for over two hours. There is a fifteen-minute intermission between acts, but the first act alone is nearly an hour and a half long. The story and the music are mostly upbeat and family-friendly, but there are a few intense moments that could be troubling to younger children or those who are more sensitive, including a large robot machine-head that speaks very loudly representing the Wizard of Oz and a flock of flying monkeys. Celebrity Attractions recommends Wicked for audiences ages eight and older and children under the age of four will not be admitted. There are some images from the show and a short video on the website that may help you determine if Wicked is appropriate for your children.
Tickets are still available. If you are looking to save a little money (tickets are not cheap, but very much worth it), try going to a show Tuesday-Thursday or Sunday evening. Ticket prices are a little lower for those showings as opposed to the Friday and Saturday performances. Prices range from $35-$150 depending on seat location and show time. You can find a complete list of show times and ticket prices on www.celebrityattractions.com.
There are plenty more opportunities to catch Wicked before it closes on September 22nd. Showtimes are Tuesday-Thursday, 7:30pm; Friday, 8pm; Saturday, 2pm & 8pm; Sunday, 2pm & 7:30pm.
