OKC Phil’s Discovery Family Series … what a name and concept because that’s exactly what it is. Attending it at the Civic Center Music Hall tells you all you need to know when you really think of it. The Discovery Family Series is your child’s ticket to all things classical music, and it’s cloaked in music from shows, movies and even video games that they will likely know.
This is an experience created just for kids. No one has needs to worry about how your little one will respond to sitting in a theater. And they can do it on their own terms. They can listen, they can cheer, they can get up and down… and get this — emotional outbursts are expected. And you will be surrounded by kids of all ages and races alongside their families.

The OKC Phil carries many accolades and accomplishments, but I think this is one of their top events because it inspires young girls and boys to venture into the magic of playing an instrument. And the fact that they take the time to curate a musical masterpiece for kids – truly shows their commitment to the community.
As a woman who played viola in orchestra from 3rd to 10th grade, I know exactly what can happen when kids see these kinds of performances. Music moves people … even little people. It does something to your soul.

This event was just an hour, which is the perfect length of time for a Sunday afternoon.
We had a great time, and I can’t wait to see what this inspires in my children. Will they consider orchestra or band? Will they simply have a special place in their hearts for classical music? Will they do this with their own kids?
But for now – check your calendar! If you missed the last OKC Phil Family Discovery Series, don’t miss the next!
