Celebate at the OKC Zoo this Week!

by Brooke Barnett

Reading Time: 2 minutesย

My biggest issue about being a parent is that my kids just insist on growing up. Just about the time I feel like I have a grasp on one stage or age, they go and launch themselves into a new one. It's been this way the entire time I've been a parent and I don't expect it to stop anytime soon—despite my best efforts to make them stay babies forever. Time just flies by, sometimes faster than I can even realize!

So, it shouldn't come as a surprise that my reaction to the OKC Zoo's upcoming celebration of Malee the Elephant's 2nd birthday was "How can she be TWO already?!?!"  I remember how excited my kids were when Malee was born, how we planned a special trip to the Zoo just to go meet the new baby elephant and how my daughter (who was 5 at the time) and I just couldn't get enough of the Zoo's new little cutie. We've been back to the Zoo many times since, and have enjoyed getting to watch Malee grow right before our eyes.  So, as the Zoo celebrates Malee's 2nd birthday next weekend, it definitely falls under the cateory of a "don't miss" event for my family.

Malee’s Birthday Bash at the OKC Zoo (2101 NE 50) will be held on Sunday, April 14 from 1-3pm, and will include cake, party favors & activities. The birthday bash is free with paid admission.

And Malee's birthday isn't the only thing that the Zoo is celebrating this coming week!  On Tuesday, April 9th, from 9am-1pm, the Zoo will hold it's annual Read Across Oklahoma event.  My son and I have attended in the past and it is a fun day celebrating reading with celebrity mascots (we saw Clifford the Big Red Dog—how cool is that?), activitis, story time and (here's my favorite part)….FREE books for the first 1,000 kids!  This year, the event will include an appearance by Oklahoma author Tammi Sauer (if you haven't read her books, you should—they are absolutely charming!) and live music from local kindie band Spaghetti Eddie (who we also love).  It's also free with paid Zoo admission.

So, let's hope for beautiful Spring weather and get out and celebrate these two fun events with the OKC Zoo!

For more information on either event, call 425-0298 or visit www.okczoo.com.

Enjoy!
Brooke
