May has some incredible opportunities for Oklahoma City family fun. This is my favorite season to get outside, go see and do, while the weather is perfect. It's not too hot yet and the winter's long chilly days have faded. April showers bring May flowers with plenty of ways to enjoy being together.
Late spring always feels like something great is about to happen and MetroFamily's May calendar features what we can look forward to this month. I write a lot about the value of community and the events scheduled for this month seem to underscore that sense of people coming together for a purpose.
The Downtown Edmond Arts Festival is going on this weekend and I don't think my family has missed attending since we've lived in the area. The event benefits Lilyfield Christian Adoption and Foster Care, which is another reason to support what is always a fun event that seems to start off our season of fair weather activities. This year's stroll through the different booths and tents will include our double-stroller, as we have Isaac, 3, and Gabriel, 4 months, to take around. Knowing that the Edmond Arts Festival supports children in our community makes it a win/win.
Sunday too will be a terrific opportunity to continue the weekend's creative themes with a visit to the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. It's Free Family Day and museum admission is waived for visitors of all ages. MetroFamily is the event's media sponsor and we'll be on-site with a table to color wearable art from noon until 5 p.m. My older son, Sam, just turned 8. He'll likely accompany me for the day, not just to participate in hands-on activities but also to help out. We have a lot of conversations about the value of work; it's good for him to see what his mom does, where and how.
Our editors always curate a list of the top free events in Oklahoma City and this month's selections certainly won't disappoint. There's something to do each weekend, besides a separate Mother's Day Fun Guide to help you and your family plan for Sunday, May 10. Suggestions for ultimate outdoor experiences and a list of top Oklahoma state parks for families can also help you make the most of weather that's just right.
My sons and I will revisit familiar venues this weekend, see what's new in their hometown and marvel at hard work, creativity and what it means to come together for something important. We hope to see you out and about as part of our community!
