Favorite Fall Books, by Jennifer

Though it still doesn’t quite feel like it, fall is here!  It’s time to open the windows, pick out pumpkins, and start planning costumes—though you may want to wait until the temperature drops a bit more for the first one.  To kick of the new season, here are five of our favorite fall books!

• Apple Farmer Annie (Monica Wellington):  I’ve written about this book more extensively at HomeschoolShare, but this is a book I love enough to share everywhere!  The illustrations are bright and cheerful and the story is fun to follow, too.  Since the Norman Public Library frowns upon patrons keeping books out on a permanent basis, we had to purchase our own copy when my son was two and it has been read by both kids countless times since then!

• In My Patch (Sara Gillingham and Lorena Siminovich):  There are several In My… board books out now and we have enjoyed them all.  There is a cute mouse finger puppet and each page follows him closer to his home in the pumpkin patch.  This is such a sweet book for your littlest readers!

• Fletcher and the Falling Leaves (Julia Rawlinson and Tiphanie Beeke):  This is a gorgeous book—especially the ending.  Fletcher is worried when the trees start to lose their leaves, but after the last one falls, he gets a beautiful surprise!

• Leaf Man (Lois Ehlert):  While the story is simple enough for preschoolers, even older kids will enjoy the amazing illustrations in this book.  This would be a great book to lead into making your own leaf man—or leaf fish, or leaf cows, or any of the other fun leaf creations in the story.  There are also labeled leaves that would make a leaf identification activity easy to do.

• There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves (Lucille Colandro):  This funny take off on the traditional story is my daughter’s current favorite.  The Old Lady is back with her incredible stomach and this time she’s swallowing all the items needed to make a scarecrow.  Whether you read it or sing it, you’re going to enjoy it!
