Selecting the right school for your child can be one of the most stressful decisions parents face. The diversity of school choices only add to the complexity of the decision-making process. No matter what option you’re considering, the ultimate goal is to find a school where your child can thrive.
We’ve put together a series interviewing parents who have made different school choices, hoping to help you feel more informed.
Below, we’ve spoken with a charter school parent to gather insights that may help clarify your decision.
What initially led you to choose a charter school for your child?
We carefully considered each of our children’s personalities, interests and learning styles when selecting their educational paths. For Ryann, we wanted a school that not only challenged her academically, but also nurtured her curiosity and love of learning. Harding Charter Prep Elementary stood out because of its innovative approach, commitment to academic excellence and ability to make learning an adventure. I firmly believe that every family should have the right to choose a school that best fits their children’s needs and aligns with their family’s values.
What unique opportunities or experiences has charter school provided for your child?
Ryann thrives in an environment where she can move between classroom learning and hands-on outdoor experiences. The school’s camp-like setting excites her, making education fun and engaging. This approach keeps her motivated and reinforces that learning happens everywhere, not just at a desk.
How does your charter school support your family’s values and lifestyle?
Education, leadership and community engagement are at the core of our family values. Harding Charter Prep Elementary provides students with opportunities to engage with city leaders and elected officials who come to read, speak and inspire. This exposure not only connects students to their community but also reinforces the belief that they can be leaders in their own right.
How does your charter school adapt to meet your child’s specific learning style/needs?
Harding Charter Prep takes a student-centered approach, allowing Ryann to explore different ways of learning. She benefits from a mix of structured academics and hands-on experiences, which keep her engaged and motivated. This flexibility ensures that her education is not just about memorizing facts, but about fostering a lifelong love of learning.
How has charter school impacted your child’s motivation to learn?
Ryann frequently talks about the colleges she wants to attend, the careers she hopes to pursue and her aspirations change daily. We embrace this because it means she believes she can do anything. The school nurtures this mindset by introducing college preparation early and reinforcing that higher education is an option for every student, regardless of background.
What opportunities has your child had in a charter school that they might not have had otherwise?
Ryann and her peers have had the opportunity to meet and interact with influential leaders from across the state who visit to see the district’s strong academic outcomes. These experiences give her real-world exposure to leadership, inspiring her to think big about her future. As Board President, I work to ensure these opportunities continue to grow so that all students benefit from meaningful connections.
What have been the biggest challenges within your charter school, and how have you/your child overcome them?
One challenge has been adjusting to the academic rigor while maintaining balance. Ryann has faced moments where she’s had to push herself, but we emphasize perseverance and curiosity as key to her success. From a leadership perspective, I work alongside educators and administrators to ensure that while our academic standards remain high, students also receive the support they need to thrive.
How does your child experience community and/or belonging within your charter school?
Harding Charter Prep fosters a strong sense of community. Ryann has built meaningful friendships and feels supported by her teachers and mentors. The school ensures that students are not just academically prepared but also part of a nurturing environment that values them as individuals.
How has your child’s mental health been impacted by your charter school?
The balance of academic challenge and social-emotional support at Harding Charter Prep has had a positive impact on Ryann’s mental well-being. She feels motivated, supported and excited about learning, which is exactly what we hoped for when choosing this school.
In what ways can you see that charter school is equipping your child for long-term success?
Ryann is growing into a confident, curious and motivated student. She is developing critical thinking skills, leadership qualities and a strong academic foundation that will serve her well in any path she chooses. In today’s evolving educational landscape, it’s more important than ever to ensure that all students, regardless of background, have access to schools that challenge, support and prepare them for the future. As Board President, I am committed to working alongside our superintendent and community stakeholders to protect high academic standards and expand opportunities so that every child receives the education they deserve. Harding Charter Prep is proof that when we work together with a shared focus on student success, we create environments where young people thrive.
