Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma is ensuring theatre is not just a luxury but a shared experience available to children across the state. With a wide range of programming, community partnerships and educational outreach, Lyric is opening the doors of live theatre to the next generation.
Breaking down barriers with free and affordable tickets
One of Lyric’s most impactful initiatives is the Free Tickets for Students program. In collaboration with local organizations, this program connects students to live theatre by removing financial barriers that might otherwise prevent attendance. In 2024 they partnered with: Boys and Girls Club OKC, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Oklahoma School for the Deaf, Pivot, Sunbeam Family Services, Sisu Youth Services, Oklahoma City Public Schools, Edmond Public Schools and Restore Family Counseling to provide the students served by these organizations with theatre experiences. *
Thanks to generous donations and community sponsorships, Lyric set a goal to provide 600 complimentary tickets in 2024. By the end of last summer, that number had reached 692 tickets. The goal for Lyric’s 2025 summer season is to give away 1,000 free tickets to area groups.
Aaron Wilder, development director at Sisu, reflected on what the experience meant to the youth experiencing homelessness that his organization serves: “Our youth were absolutely thrilled by Lyric’s production of Cinderella, and the seats were exceptional. The kindness and generosity displayed by everyone at Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma have left a lasting impression on all of us. By offering opportunities like this performance, our youth feel a sense of normalcy, foster their connection to the community and expand their imaginations about what their futures can hold.”
Additionally, Lyric offers $20 Student Rush Tickets for college students at every performance. Available one hour before curtain with a valid student ID, this affordable option gives students access to spontaneous, meaningful encounters with the arts. **
Youth theatre comes to the library with Lyric’s Cinderella tour
Lyric’s commitment to youth education begins with its Thelma Gaylord Academy, offering classes, private lessons and summer camps for children of all ages. One of this summer’s programs is an audition-based camp that gives young performers the opportunity to rehearse and perform in a production of Cinderella.
These students will take their talents on the road, touring various Metropolitan Library locations as part of the Neighborhood Arts series, bringing musical theatre directly to communities. These performances are free for children and families to enjoy.
Statewide school outreach: Theatre that travels
Through the Musical Interactive program, Lyric takes professional touring productions to schools across Oklahoma, blending education and entertainment to spark a love for the performing arts. These performances are more than just fun — they’re built to engage students, promote literacy and make the arts accessible regardless of location.
For the 2025–2026 school year, Lyric will tour The Will Rogers Follies. This lively production takes students on a journey through the highlights of the musical while teaching about performance, production, the history of musical theatre and “Oklahoma’s Favorite Son.” Any school can schedule a free performance — it is as easy as filling out a form on Lyric’s website.
Whether it’s a child seeing their first musical, a student discovering their passion for performance or a family bonding over a shared story, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma is proving that the arts belong to everyone.
