5 Fun Activities to Enjoy at OKC Parks This Month

You and your family may be very surprised by all the events, activities and things to do at OKC Parks. The Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation Department manages almost 200 attractions including parks, walking trails, swimming pools and recreation centers for the community to enjoy.

Their community and recreation centers offer daily activities and classes exploring everything from performing arts and cooking to individual and team sports, numerous adaptive activities perfect for children and adults who have special needs and frequent Hooked on Fishing learn-to-fish sessions. OKC Parks’ line-up of activities is designed to cater to everyone, regardless of age, ability or interest.

Every month, MetroFamily will work with the OKC Parks Department to highlight the top things families need to know about OKC Parks. Come back often to be in the know and sign up for the activities, events and things to do that work best for your children and you!

A Very Special Winter Holiday Party (Adaptive) at Sellers Recreation Center

When: Dec. 16, 6:30-8 p.m.
Where: 8301 S Villa Ave, OKC
Ages: All ages welcome
Cost: Free

Enjoy a wonderful winter holiday party for families with loved ones with special needs or disabilities, hosted by OKC Parks and Sooner Success. The evening will include games, arts and crafts and seasonal drinks and sweets. The first 100 people will receive a free book or gift. It’s an event sure to create lasting memories.


Nature’s Classroom: Dig Dirt at Martin Park Nature Center

When: Dec. 5, 10-11 a.m.
Where: 5000 W Memorial Rd, OKC
Ages: 5-12
Cost: $2

Prepare to get your hands dirty as you explore the world of dirt! Our soil ecosystem is fascinating with its diverse inhabitants—from tiny microorganisms to earthworms and insects. Participants will learn the importance of soil, have a ‘worm meet and greet’, and make a craft to take home. Pre-registration is required and a parent and/or guardian must register and attend with their child(ren).


Family Boot Camp at Willa D. Johnson Community Room

When: Wednesdays, Dec. 4, 11 & 18, 6-7 p.m.
Where: 909 Frederick Douglass Ave, OKC
Ages: 6 & up
Cost: $5 or free for Gold Members

These Family Boot Camp sessions combine individual exercises and team-building challenges to support physical health and foster positive family bonds. Designed to include a variety of exercises at various fitness levels, anyone can participate aged six years and older. So grab your crew and get ready to move!


Winter Birding for Families at Martin Park Nature Center

When: Dec. 14, 9:30-11 a.m.
Where: 5000 W Memorial Rd, OKC
Ages: All ages welcome
Cost: Free

Do you hear a bird’s call or see its colors and wonder what kind it is? Or maybe you’re already a ‘birder’ and enjoy the thrill of the search? If so, join the experts from Martin Park on a guided tour to learn more about some fine-feathered friends. They’ll answer questions and discuss the birds and animals the group sees along the hike. Pre-registration is required and a parent and/or guardian must register and attend with their child(ren).


Holiday Greens Centerpiece Workshop at Will Rogers Gardens

When: Dec. 19, 6-8 p.m.
Where: Ed Lycan Conservatory, 3400 NW 36th St, OKC
Ages: 14 & up
Cost: $35

Deck your halls this holiday season by creating your own holiday centerpiece. All supplies will be provided and will include seasonal florals, rich greenery, and other natural elements. With instructional help, you’ll design a one-of-a-kind creation. Spots are limited and pre-registration is required.
