Creating a Feeling of Peace

In a world of bad news, terror and chaos (in addition to the world news) we all could use a place of peace. Due to the daily demands of parenting, work and bills, most of us are unable to just drop everything and take off for out favorite vacation spot. It's okay, though, because there are many ways to create a feeling of peace right where you are.

Following the death of my grandmother last summer, I brought her dining room table and chairs to my home, along with several of her marvelous paintings. In the midst of grieving as well as the normal stresses of everyday life, I find an amazing sense of peace, comfort and stability just beginning my day sitting at that wonderful table, sipping coffee while surrounded by those familiar paintings. It has become an oasis, providing a brief respite from the many challenges that quickly unfold throughout the course of even a normal day. It's turned into a welcoming place that even if only for a few fleeting moments provides me with a calmness of spirit and centers me for whatever lies ahead. I don't turn on the news, I don't answer the phone, I don't do anything but drink in the serenity of a few moments surrounded by special things.

What about you? Do you often find yourself overwhelmed with no place to go? Maybe you can find a small area in your home or office where you can surround yourself with items which calm and comfort you. It doesn't have to be big and it doesn't have to take much time. Yet each of us is built in a way that requires periods of quietness in our hearts and minds to sustain the strength we need each day.

Try it! While you are taking care of everyone else throughout your day, give yourself a worry-free zone in which to renew, relax and recharge.
