Thrive & Dime: Winter Snow Crafts

by Megan Beisel

Reading Time: 2 minutes

As the cold of winter really sets in, we are embracing all the cozy elements of the season to get us through to spring, like twinkle lights, hot cocoa and our favorite winter books. Add the spirit of the season with these two winter scene crafts to try.

Snow Globe Jar

Another fun thing to try is to create a winter scene in a jar using Epsom salt and figurines. I love to create these scenes as decor pieces when my house feels a little bare post-holidays.

Supplies:

  • Jar
  • Epsom salt
  • Toys or figurines
  • Bottle brush trees

Gather your supplies. I have picked up a few figurines through the years in the miniatures department at craft stores. This time of the year you can usually find them on sale. My boys also love it when they get to contribute…I’ve had snow scenes with dump trucks and toy tigers as well. Add Epsom salt to your jar and then add the figures to build the scene. You can also add battery operated lights if you wish.

Cozy Geometric Winter Scene

Supplies:

  • White Cardstock
  • Construction Paper- Various Colors
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • White Paint
  • Q-Tips

This simple winter craft only requires a few supplies and can be done by all ages. For younger children, you can precut the triangles and squares in a variety of colors. Then, trim the background color and glue it down to the cardstock. After that, the kids can use their imaginations to add trees, and houses using shapes cut from the construction paper. When the winter scene is layer the way that you like, add snowflakes by using the q tip to dot the paper with white paint.

Other fun winter activities:

  • Bundle up and go for a winter walk when the weather is mild
  • Build a blanket fort
  • Have an indoor picnic
  • Try making homemade whipped cream or freeze whipped cream on a cookie sheet and then cut out with cookie cutters to add to hot cocoa
  • Surprise a friend with coffee or hot cocoa
  • Try a new soup recipe

Winter themed books to enjoy:

  • The Red Sled by Lita Judge
  • Winter Walk by Virginia Snow
  • The Winter Wish by Gillian Shields
  • When WIll it Snow by Kathryn White
  • Penguin and Pinecone by Salina Yoon
  • One Winter’s Night by Claire Freedman
