Spotlight on Character Award Winners, December, 2007

Each month, MetroFamily and the Spotlight on Character corporate sponsor, OERB, honor two students from two age categories (K-5 and 6-12) for their outstanding character. To nominate a student you know, go here.

This month's winners:

Amy Trang displays diligence on a daily basis by maintaining high grades while taking five advanced placement classes. Amy also makes time for generosity through Key Club activities, volunteering at the library, and working on the Hugs Project (a nonprofit dedicated to making life better for our soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan). She also helps her parents with her four younger siblings.

In 2001, Amy was diagnosed with Lupus, but she hasn't let this obstacle stop her from pursuing her goals and helping others. Amy is a senior at Moore High School and is the daughter of Thanh Trang and Phuong Trang.

Michael Bird enjoys spreading good cheer throughout the community by sharing his homemade treats. From the time he was a toddler, Michael has been baking with his grandmother, Judith Bird, and he has always loved to give away the things he baked. For Christmas, he'll be passing out "cookie trees"-foam cones covered with homemade cookies. At least once a month, Michael bakes goodies to share.  Over the years, he has become very proficient in the kitchen and can now crack an egg with just one hand. But what Michael takes the most joy in is giving away his creations.

"I think he loves sharing with others as much as he loves eating the cookies," Judith said. Michael is also a Boy Scout. "But he was passing out cookies long before he was a Scout." Michael is the son of Jennifer Bird and is a home-educated second grader who lives in Bethany.
