  • Great program encourages summer reading

Draper Park Christian Church conducted their third annual summer reading program. The certificates and prizes will be given out Sunday, August 16, to the 38 children who participated this year. We started the program to introduce children to reading as early as possible. Our reading program includes children from age 0 - 17 years. We encourage parents to read to their children and prizes are given to these children as well as the readers. Our reading program theme this year was "Be a Home Run Reader." The readers were required to read books located in our library or books of the Bible. We feel the program was very successful, in that, children really enjoyed the challenge and competition. The lowest amount of books which could be read was 4 and one of our readers read 159 books. We are very proud of our youth and feel that they will be better prepared to start back to school because they have been reading during the summer months. Statistically, students forget about 40%-60% of what they learned during the school year if they do not continue to read and learn during the summer. We also are attempting to get young readers to learn values which will carry them through the rest of their lives.
