Let’s Eat Restaurant Review: Los Amigos
Have you ever seen a restaurant so cute and enticing that you have to give it a whirl? Los Amigos struck me that way—like a quaint casita in the middle of Oklahoma City—a casita surrounded by cars. Before my daughter Mandy took off for college, I enlisted her help in checking the place out because we are always on the lookout for good Mexican restaurants.
When we entered, a line of people were waiting to pay, which is always a positive sign. We were there for a weekday lunch and the patrons included business men and women and some families—the majority seemed like repeat customers, another positive.
I tend to judge my Mexican food experience on how good the chips and salsa are since they are my favorite items. Los Amigos scored high in this area. The chips had a good flavor, the salsa was fresh and chunky, and the cheese dip wasn’t too thin. Their regular sauce was good, but I like the hotter sauce better. (If you can’t take the heat, put down that chip!) They also offer a carrot, onion, and jalapeño relish upon request.
We ordered a wide variety of options on the lunch menu. Mandy ordered the Chimichanga Lunch ($5.75)—a chicken chimichanga with cheese sauce accompanied by rice and beans. It was an ample serving, but a chimichanga is supposed to be fried to a nice golden brown and Mandy’s was more like a chicken burrito—a soft flour tortilla packed full of shredded chicken but with no shredded cheese inside.
I ordered the Combo Plate ($5.25)—a cheese enchilada, crispy ground beef taco, beans, and rice. I requested whole beans in lieu of the refried. Both types of beans and the rice were very good, and the portions were certainly generous. But the enchilada and taco just weren’t as good as some I have had.
Mandy finished off her meal with a cinnamon and sugar encrusted soapapilla and I enjoyed the flan (caramel custard).
As you can tell, we appreciated some aspects of our visit; others not so much. But do not mark this little casita off your list—as with other things, Mexican food tends to be subjective. Ole!
