How Metro Moms Find Time For Themselves

We asked our E-Update subscribers how they squeeze time for themselves into their schedules and, of course, we got some good ideas. A mom who wishes to remain anonymous also sent a heartfelt question (see the final entry, below). No doubt, other moms share her concern-how to put themselves on the list of priorities. If you've got advice for a mom experiencing burn-out, log onto MetroFamilyMagazine.com, click on the Mom Time link, and send us a message. Mom exhaustion is an ever-present threat, so we'll keep the conversations going as long as you'd like! In the meantime, don't miss this month's feature, "Mommy Martyr Makeover," on page 16 for encouragement about making time for yourself.
Every night after praying for my three children, ages 6, 18, and 22, I lay in bed and read for 30-60 minutes. This is what I reserve as "my quiet time" to take a breath before the end of each day.

My friend and fellow mom and I like to take our free time, which is rare, to go to the movies. We wait until Sunday night after the kids are tucked in and things are ready for the week and we go to the newest "chick flick." We split a large popcorn and splurge on candy bars and Cokes. We get there early so we have the time before the movie to catch up. We don't get to go every week, but we try to go twice a month. Not only do we get to see the latest movies, it also gives our husbands quiet time, since the kids are already in bed.

I like to spend "mom time" working out two days a week for an hour. It gives the gift of time in two directions-immediately with time away, and in the future by helping me be as healthy as possible to be around longer. I also like to squeeze in a 30 minute walk or jog at least five days a week.

My husband and I have an understanding that I need some "me time" by myself occasionally. I stay home with my children and love it, but sometimes I need to focus on me because as the saying goes, "If Momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy." I like to shop, scrapbook, have a girls' night out, go to the casino-whatever, as long as I have fun and do something for myself. It gets my other mom friends out as well. I feel recharged and ready to face those daily tasks.

I am a busy mom of a 5-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter. I'm also a decorative artist, painting murals and furniture and am happily married to a full time nursing student who has a busy schedule of his own. We are very involved in church activities which have been a great way for us to meet other couples going through the same stage of life. But I was having trouble finding time for me. After I had my son and became a stay-at-home mom, I forgot how to speak to adults, how to dress, and really lost my sense of self. My mother told me about a women's organization she was a member of many years ago. I contacted them and found out that they are stronger than ever and have been having fun internationally for 75 years now! It's called Beta Sigma Phi. The sorority stands for life, learning, and friendship. I've been a member for five years and have made many lasting friendships. I consider the members my sisters. We have service projects, cultural outings, and educational programs at our meetings. And most of all, we socialize! The most important part is that you are loved for who you are (and there is food at every occasion!). Visit BetaSigmaPhi.org to find a chapter near you. It has changed my life!

My favorite me time activity is to take time to read a great book. I like to get up early and take a book and a cup of coffee out on my screened porch and read.

My "me time" is definitively to go to the gym. I can get the stress out of my body and, of course, stay in shape. After I sweat a lot, mommy is happy at home.

I feel like a walking, talking, non-being-kids always need or want something, husband is there in a close second, then there's work and what few friends I've been able to keep, even though they are low on my list. Where am I supposed to fit in "me" time? Please let me know!
