Different Thoughts about Spring Break

Spring Break…for most parents, it’s a fun time with kids…maybe a vacation or just staying home to relax and play! For many parents who have a child with special needs, it’s stressful because it is a transition—actually, it’s two transitions. Sometimes, children who have special needs do not handle change very well; therefore, Spring Break can be quite stressful. These children can even lose skills and regress in school. So, be sensitive and support these families who may not have the same feelings about Spring Break that you do. It’s a paradigm shift, I know. They are still adjusting too; but they truly appreciate your patience and understanding during changing times.

Our stressful time is summer. Our little autism guy has decided that if he is home, his dad should be also. Since Dad is our son's "one and only," it makes for long, hot days for my daughter and I as we strggule through the day. Our son is made of cement and once an idea is in his head, he is steadfast and determined to follow through on it. He is unaware of what others need/want from/of him. I dread the long summer days. My husband likes the lazy ease of the days with no routine, and no schedule. Routine and schedule are both something our son thrives on. It is so hard to agure with our son all summer to get him to cooperate and obey.
