All Things Adoption and More

Kimberly Peck is the mother of two young children who have come to her family through international adoption. In addition, she is an adult adoptee herself and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the adoption field. Kimberly and her husband both grew up in Oklahoma and have called the Oklahoma City area their home since 1996. Kimberly and her husband became parents in 2004 when they traveled to bring their daughter and first child home and then again in 2007, when they traveled for their son’s adoption.
  • Getting "fit"....

Getting “Fit”….. ….may just do me in. I resolved for 2008 to take better care of myself. I know I need to do this for myself and for my kids and my family. I’d like to see them grow up and be there for them. I’d like to be the type of mom who can keep up with them at the park or playground—not the type who’s behind won’t fit down the slide!
  • What is a Home Study?

Exactly, what is a HOME STUDY? As a social worker who performs home studies for families who seek to adopt a child, I get a lot of nervous people on the other end of the phone when I first speak with them about a home study. Think about it- the name itself-HOME STUDY sounds very….clinical, judging, and well scary!
  • Feeling "ratty"

This month was Lunar New Year which is the New Year’s celebration for several Asian countries. It’s Tet for Vietnam, Chinese New Year for China, and Lunar New Year for Korea. This year it’s the Year of the Rat. I always have plans to celebrate Lunar New Year to incorporate my children’s birth culture into our family life….and I seem to always fall short.
  • Don't Call Me—I'll Call You

There is a “sacred” time in my house…. All mothers of young children know what I am talking about. It’s that time between 1:30 and 3:00 pm and one thing I know for certain, it is not nearly long enough.
  • Gotcha Days

This may be a term that you are unfamiliar with unless you are involved with the adoption world. In our house, Gotcha Day refers to the day we received our children and traveled home with them. It is a term with some controversy as to some it conjures up images of mosquitoes! Whatever it is called, be it Homecoming Day, Airplane Day, Family Day, or Gotcha Day, it is a day to be celebrated!
  • H.O.P.E. for Waiting Families

In working with adoptive families and from my experience as part of an adoptive family through international adoption, I know firsthand that one of the hardest elements is the WAIT. By wait I mean the time the entire process can take, from starting the process to your child’s homecoming.
  • Adoptive Parenting is Real Parenting

As an adoptive mom to two Korean-born children, we get noticed. It must be the children—trust me, my dear husband and I were very good blenders before!
