What to do and where to go in the OKC metro

Summer Movie Fun

May 25, 2012 - 09:08 AM
Summer Movie Fun

When the heat of summer hits, there are only two places that I want to be—submerged in the nearest swimming pool or safely ensconsed somewhere air conditioned.  Even though I am a native Oklahoman, 100 degree heat and high humidity just isn't my bag.

If you are like me, finding fun indoor summer activities is always a plus.  Some of our favorites are the summer movie programs offered local threaters across the metro.  Here's a rundown of the available programs:

For truly frugal fun, you can take in a totally FREE movie at the Dickinson Theatres, which screen family-friendly movies at 10:00am and 12:30pm throughout the summer.  Special concessions are available for $4.

Dickinson's lineup is:

  • Dolphin Tale—June 12-14
  • Thr Pagemaster—June 19-21
  • Puss in Boots—June 26-28
  • Alvin & the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked—July 3-5
  • Mr, Popper's Penguins—July 10-12
  • Stuart Little 3—July 17-19
  • Happy Feet Two—July 24-26
  • Babe—July 31 -Aug. 2

The films often sell out quickly, so be sure to arrive early to get a seat. For more information, visit their website.

The  Harkins and Warren Theatres offer similar low-cost programs.  If you've never been, the premise behind these programs is simple and brilliant—for one low price, you can enjoy a series of kid- and family-friendly movies all summer long and can choose the date(s) that work for best for your schedule.  Tickets go quickly for these programs, so if you are limited on the date(s) that you can go to the theater, be sure to purchase your season pass right away.

At the Harkins Theatre in Bricktown, you can pick the day of the week that you wish to attend, and movies are screened at 9:45am.   For $5, you can see 10 kid-friendly movies throughout the summer.  For those who love a treat with their movies, a children's concession combio is available for $4.50.

The Harkin's lineup is:

  • Happy Feet Two—June 4-8
  • Horton Hears a Who—June 11-15
  • Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked—June 18-22
  • Rio—June 25-29
  • Kung Fu Panda 2—July 2-6
  • Mr. Popper's Penguins—July 9-13
  • Puss in Boots—July 16-20
  • The Smurfs—July 23-27
  • Arthur Christmas—July 30-August 3

Find more info on their website.

At the Moore Warren Theatre, movies are screened on Tuesday and Thursdays at 10:00am. Individual tickets can be purchased for $2 per person, or you can save money by purcahsing a season pass for all ten movies for only $15.  To complete your movie experience, a special "kid pack" concession combo is available for $5.00.

The Warren's lineup is:

  • Shark Tale—May 29 and 31
  • Rio—June 5 and 7
  • Despicable Me—June 12 and 14
  • Horton Hears a Who— June 19 and 21
  • Aliens in the Attic—June 26 and June 28
  • Rango—July 3 and July 5
  • Shrek—July 10 and 12
  • Kung Fu Panda 2— July 17 and 19
  • How to Train Your Dragon—July 24 and 26
  • Puss in Boots—July 31 and August 2
