Hauntingly Fun Events Next Week!

I love Halloween—and not just because I can sneak chocolate out of my children's candy buckets after they go to bed. I love the excitement that my kids have about picking their costumes and getting dressed up, not to mention all the fun events going on in the community around this time.  While there are a tons of fall festivals and Halloween events going on over the two weeks (find a comprehensive listing in our 2012 Guide to Fall Fun in the OKC metro), two of my family's most favorite events take place next week.

Haunt the Harn at the Harn Homestead & Museum (1721 N. Lincoln) is a reasonably priced event that combines Halloween fun with the walk through the venue's historic grounds.  Upon arrival, kids trick-or-treat at the various historical buildings on the organization's campus.  It is just the right amount of candy so that the kids feel truly treated, but not so much that you worry about the resulting sugar crash. Then, you can take a hay ride around the grounds and visit the red barn for fun Halloween-themed games, face painting, snacks and other fun. Haunt the Harn is held on Thursday, October 25 from 6-9pm, and tickets for kids are $3 in advance and $5 at the door. Up to two adults are admitted free per group, so it is a nice way to spend only a little cash for a big amount of fun. For more information, call 235-4058 or visit www.harnhomestead.com.

29th Annual Haunt the Zoo at the Oklahoma City Zoo is the ultimate trick-or-treating event—combining our incredible zoo and all the fun of trick-or-treating. More than 20 themed candy booths are located across Zoo grounds, including not-so-scary Halloween scenes and familiar characters. Be sure to bring your camera, because there are great photo opportunities throughout the entire event. It seems like the event gets busier the closer you get to Halloween, so choose any early date to avoid some of the crowds. But, even if you end up there on a busy night, it is fun to see all the different costumes—so it's a great chance to see every type of costume imaginable, plus some creative homemade costumes. It takes about an hour to get through all the booths, depending on the crowds. Haunt the Zoo runs from Friday, October 26-Wednesday, October 31 from 6:30-8:30pm nightly.  Tickets are $7 at the gate ($6 in advance) and adults are free.  For more information, call 424-3344 or visit www.okczoo.com.

If you want to avoid accumulating more candy, you can also choose to attend the Zoo's Haunt the Zoo Preview Hike.  This is a chance for families to get a sneak peek at the Haunt the Zoo booths and take fun Halloween photos, without the crowds and candy. ZooFriends members can attend for $15, and nonmembers are $18. Parents are free with a paid child. The Preview Hike will be held on Thursday, October 25 from 6-8pm and preregistration is required. For more information, call 425-0218.

Next week, Sara will share some fun trick-or-treat alternatives, but we hope you will get out and enjoy some pre-Halloween fun this week.  And if you have any extra chocolate, feel free to send it my way!

Happy Halloween!
Brooke

About This Blog

Brooke Barnett is MetroFamily's Assistant Editor, Online Content Editor and social media managerBrooke Barnett—and is constantly amazed by the sheer volume of ways for families to have fun in the Oklahoma City metro! A native Oklahoman, she is a work-at-home mom to two awesome kids—daughter Murphy is 6 and son Graham is 3.  Alongside husband Jason, Brooke and family are often seen at family events around the metro—enjoying everything from live music to museums to fun playgrounds and more.

Sara Riester is MetroFamily's Calendar Editor. Born and raised in the Chicago suburbs, she moved to Oklahoma five years ago and loves working on the calendar for MetroFamily because it has introduced her to so many activities and venues she would not otherwise have known about. Sara is a work-at-home mom who lives with her husband John and her two precocious children--son Joshua is 5 and daughter Joy is 2. As a very musical family, concerts are a favorite choice for family outings, but the Riesters can be found all over the metro enjoying a wide variety of what OKC has to offer (often accompanied by the Barnetts).
