Father’s Day: things to do and places to go

by Callie Collins

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Oklahoma City family fun is all about Dad this weekend.

Let’s be honest: it’s hard to find the perfect Father’s Day gift. I can’t remember what my sons and I gave my husband last year. One new baby later and I’m maxed out on what I can remember at any given time.

Two days before Father’s Day and here we are, no gift in hand, zero good ideas. When I think back to childhood and what we gave my Dad, there were handicrafts that stand out, homemade cards and stamped leather bookmarks. Cakes and pies.

I’m not sure what dads in general want for Father’s Day. Naps, alone time and a clean house seemed to top every list I read this year about what moms want for Mother’s Day. Dads are just more of a question mark. We’ve done superhero-themed cakes, engraved watches, wallets and the usual summer camp crafts. What I hope, though, is that there’s a great memory associated with the day. Objects are easily lost but what’s lived can’t be taken away.

If you’re looking for a Father’s Day activity, find it here in our Father’s Day Fun Guide.

Also? Take photos! I realized going through my camera roll that the images here are literally the only presentable ones we have of my husband with the kids.

Here are three events worth considering to make a special memory with the Dad or grandpa or even both generations if you can this Father’s Day:

Tuttle Ice Cream Festival: I’ve never been to the Tuttle Ice Cream Festival but friends have mentioned that it’s worth the hour’s drive. Sometimes, that car time too can be actually be a plus because you, the adults, get to talk, with everyone settled into one place and other elements like messes and screens that are normally a distraction can be added or subtracted without an entire house to run through. The festival looks fun, with a car show and tours of the Braum’s facility. I love that it’s not actually on Father’s Day so dads can still sleep in and do more than just one thing.

Free Family Day at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art: This venue is new to me too. It would be something really different for our family since my husband isn’t from this state and there’s an art series presented by the Chickasaw Cultural Center. A free activity can be ideal, especially when it gets everyone out of the house and frees up that budget for something else on Dad’s Day. Find more info here.

RIVESPORT Adventures: I’ve visited RIVERSPORT with my oldest son and we did have a memorable afternoon that he still talks about. His Dad, though, has never been. Dads eat free at the venue on Sunday and there are admission deals too. Curious about what to do at RIVERSPORT? Find out here.

A lot of local venues have free admission on Father’s Day. Get the full list here.

No matter where you spend your Father’s Day and with whom, I hope this weekend brings you happiness together.
