2012 School Supply / Backpack Drive Events

Want to lend a hand to students in need this school year? Need help getting your school supplies this year? These events in the OKC metro area can help!

Back to School Supply Drive at Youth Services for Oklahoma County, Inc. (201 NE 50th, OKC) is in need of white polo shirts, khaki pants, looseleaf notebook paper, pencil holders/bags, file organizers, 3-ring binders, hole punches, binder clips/paper clips, tape, dictionaries/thesauruses (pocket sized), journals/pocket calendars, USB/Flash drives, pocket size tissues, hand sanitizer, bandages, alarm clocks, batteries (AA or AAA), and wallets as well as gift cards or monetary donations. 235-7537, www.ysoc.org.

Drew and Kaci's 10th Annual School Supply Drive asks the public to donate school supplies and school uniform items at participating Arvest Bank Locations. Monetary donations are also being accepted online. Donations will be distributed by the Christmas Connection during their free for families Backpack Shopping Days. July 9 through August 6

Operation Homefront Back-to-School Brigade will be collecting school supplies and monetary donations to help give children of military families the opportunity to start school with all the supplies they need to be successful. July 16 through July 20

United Way of Norman ABC School Supply Program at CrossPointe Church (2601 24th Ave SE, Norman) provides FREE school supplies for Lexington, Little Axe, Noble, Norman and Robin Hill families with children entering Pre-K through 12th grades who meet specific income guidelines. Intake will be July 16-20 with supplies being distributed on August 11. Families must provide current proof of income, current proof of residence, social security cards for all family members and a current drivers license or photo ID card. July 21 through August 17

Citizens Caring for Children Back to School Event at CCC Resource Center (730 W Wilshire Creek, OKC) matches children in foster care ages preK through 12th with a personal shopper who will help them find a new outfit, shoes, socks and underwear for their first day of school. Uniforms are also available. Children will receive a new backpack and school supplies. Foster parents must provide a valid driver's license and placement paperwork indicating the child is in custody of the Department of Human Services. Monday-Friday, 9am-noon & 1-5pm. University of Phoenix and Boys & Girls Club of Oklahoma Backpack & School Supply Drive is accepting new school supplies and backpacks at University of Phoenix locations in OKC at 6501 N Broadway Extension, Suite 100 and at 6304 SW 3rd St. www.phoenix.edu.

July 30

Stuff the SMO Van at Science Museum Oklahoma provides FREE admission from 2-5pm for anyone who brings in new school supplies. Supplies will be donated to the Foundation for Oklahoma City Public Schools. 602-3760, reservations@sciencemuseumok.org.

August 4

FREE Feeding 5000 & More at OKC Faith Church (I-40 & Portland) will be handing out 10,000 burritos as well as backpacks full of school supplies. Also offers an anti-drug/anti-violence presentation with OKC Thunder’s Rumble the Bison as well as America’s Got Talent acrobatic dunking stars, Acrodunk. Attendance at the presentation is required to receive food and supplies. FREE Back to School Round Up at Alameda Church of Christ (801 E Alameda, Norman) provides 700 backpacks with school supplies to families in the Norman area as well as an information fair for parents with local non-profit organizations, lunch, moonbounce and slide, popcorn, cotton candy, carnival games, videos and FREE haircuts for students. 9am-noon. 321-0788, www.alameda-streams.org.

August 5

FREE Back to School Bash at Capitol Hill Baptist Church (304 SW 134th, OKC) features FREE school supplies for each school age child present, food & drinks, inflatables, games and door prizes. 5-7pm. 799-9799, www.chbchurch.org.

August 10-11

U R Special Back-to-School Clothing Distribution (25 W 3rd St, Edmond) offers free back-to-school clothing for children in need from ages 3 through 9. All children should bring proof of Edmond residency or proof of enrollment at an Edmond school. Children must be present to personally select and receive their new clothes. August 11

FREE Back-to-School Healthy FunFair at Vintage Church (3601 S Broadway, Edmond) features face painting, haircuts, emergency personnel, Boy Scouts of America, health and vision checkups, games, hotdogs and sno-cones. 500 backpacks stuffed with school supplies will be given to children in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Parent or legal guardian must be present to register each family. The first 500 students will receive backpacks. 8am-noon. 562-1200, www.vintagechurch.tv.

August 12

FREE Back 2 School Splash at Highpointe Church (6810 NW 122nd, OKC) provides backpacks with school supplies and features FREE hot dogs and drinks, popcorn, snowcones, Kids Fun Zone, water games, inflatables and FREE haircuts for kids. September 17-28

Team Up OKC School Supply Drive will be collecting school supply donations at participating American Cleaners, Panera Break and Bank of Oklahoma locations. All donations will be delivered to the Teachers Warehouse at the Foundation for Oklahoma City Public Schools.
