Rules, Rewards & Encouragement for a Child With Asperger's

Rules. An Aspie’s blessing and curse.

Explaining Autism to Children

It did not take long before he started asking why he was going to special doctors and therapists while his sister was not. He wanted to know what was wrong. He asked, “Am I going to die?”

Who's Your Hulk?

Who is your Hulk? Is it your child with special needs? Is it a kiddo whose square peg learning will never fit in the round hole?

What's So Odd About Autism?

A sense of hopelessness sets in as one contemplates the social. What’s the point? Why try to be social when experience illuminates your social ineptitude?

Odd Dad's View on Fidget Spinners

Like any parent of a child on the Autism spectrum, searching for anything that will assist your efforts to calm, focus and soothe your child is an obsession.

Matthieu’s First Concert

I loved seeing him swept up in the music. I wish I could have bottled the moment to keep forever.

The Force Within

Believe it or not, each of us has a little bit of the force in us. You may want to deny it, but it’s there.

Marching to the Beat

Just think of what the autism world would like if we put our number focus on the strengths of an individual, instead of focusing mostly on the challenges?

Asperger's? What?

She said, “He’s smart, and the smart ones are hard.”

Thinking Differently: A Holiday Edition

It was hard for me to give up trying to re-create the memories from my own childhood. But as I learned, I realized our best chance for success was to give my son a say in our plans.

I Should Have Seen It Coming

You know those stories you start hearing as you get older? The ones that made your cheeks turn a shade of crimson red that only a parent or significant other could truly appreciate.

Open Letter

So you were concerned that something was “not quite right” with your child, but hesitated to go forward with testing because you didn’t want your child to be “labeled.”

Everybody Has Something

Kids, especially teenagers, don’t want to stand out. They want to seamlessly float along, incognito among their peers. Like oatmeal. Or vanilla ice cream. Or tofu.

The Start of The Journey

It doesn’t matter when you notice, but when you do it cannot be ignored. When you find yourself at that crossroad of “Typical” and “Unique,” there are a few suggestions I’d like to offer up to make your journey a little easier.
