Great news for fans of OETA PBS Kids. The network is expanding their children's programming and debuting “PBS Kids Family Night” next month, offering different features like movie specials and themed programs. Debuting April 21, the special programming will run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and will repeat on Saturday and Sunday evenings.

PBS Kids is a free service channel and offers 24/7 educational programming to viewers. Popular shows on the channel are “Wild Kratts," "Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood," "Odd Squad,” “Nature Cat” and “Ready Jet Go!”

“By offering PBS KIDS programming 24/7, PBS stations will extend the reach and impact that they already have in their communities, where they provide essential services for families,” said PBS President and CEO Paula A. Kerger.

Since May 2006, OETA has offered a local KIDS channel providing mostly children’s programming from 4 a.m. to 9 p.m. With PBS Kids 24/7 service the children’s channel now offers grade school programming from 5 a.m. until 7 a.m., then preschool and kindergarten programs until 4:30 p.m., then returning to grade school programs until 9 p.m., after it is a repeat of earlier programs.

“We knew the importance of educational children's programming and we made it one of our priorities when we added our three new digital channels in 2006.” OETA Vice President of Operations Janette Thornbrue said.

“This would ensure the content would be available to all children and caregivers in the state.” Thornbrue added.

According to a PBS spokesperson, later this year the live stream will introduce an integrated games feature which will allow children to switch between an OETA PBS Kids program and a learning activity digitally.
