30 Day Mom Challenge Day 29: Unplug When Your Child is With You

30 Day Mom Challenge Day 29: Turn off your phone, computer or TV today when your child is with you.

I did not go willingly to this challenge. It took my smart phone malfunctioning and me not wanting to even look at the phone much less access it to get me to turn off my media.

I know! That’s horrible. But that’s the world we live in. I’m a work-at-home mom who fits in professional duties around my kids’ school schedule. Sometimes that means that while they’re working on homework, I’m working on work work. Or I’m trying to catch up with friends and family on Facebook. Or playing a game to decompress.

Yes; my name is Mari and I’m a technology addict.

I realize that I spend too much time connected, so this summer I’m vowing to disconnect more. To set rules on when and where I can access electronics and when and where I should leave them along. Going off the grid helps; as I’m writing this, we’re planning a trip that will take us to a week’s-worth of spotty at best phone and internet connectivity. It makes me a little apprehensive, but I know that it will be a good way to kick this day’s challenge into a habit.

Mari Farthing is the mother of two young children, the wife of an air force member and the editor of MetroFamily Magazine.

Originally from Wisconsin, Mari has lived and worked in Washington DC, Germany, and Oklahoma, courtesy of the United States Air Force.

A work-at-home mom for eight years, Mari tries to juggle it all. She's interested in books, music, knitting, running, cooking and writing, and occasionally gets bored and adds a few new interests to fill up that final 15 minutes of her day.

She sometimes succeeds, sometimes fails, and constantly rewrites the to-do list that manages her days.
