Homeschool Programs in OKC

If you haven't checked out the January issue of MetroFamily yet, you need to! It's the education issue, and it's full of all kinds of activities and information for families, including homeschoolers. It was fun to get to talk with all of these different venues that offer programming specifically for homeschooling families, and this week I want to share with you a bit more about the homeschool art classes offered at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art this semester.

My kids haven't attended any classes at the museum yet because since we live in the Tulsa area, I just can't commit to driving to OKC on a weekly basis.  When we attended the homeschool day at the Oklahoma History Center in October I filled out a survey for the museum saying that if they had one session classes we would love to try them out, and apparently, so did a lot of other people, because this spring they are offering both multi-session and single session classes. I love it when places listen to feedback and act on it so quickly. So this April we'll get to try out a class for ourselves and I'm excited.

So, what's available? There are two different multi-session classes this semester. These classes meet once a week for four weeks on Fridays from 9:30-11 a.m. Design, Sculpt, Create runs from Feb. 6 to Feb. 27 and Draw, Paint, Print runs from May 1 to May 22. The first class will focus on sculpture before the 19th century and the second will be about more modern and contemporary art. Both classes will feature gallery trips and sketching and a new project each week, as well as a multi-week project. These classes are $35 per child for members and $45 per child for non-members. (That is an awesome deal!) They are geared for kids 6-13 years old.

There are also two different single-session classes you might want to try, which are based on special exhibitions at the museum. On Feb. 17 from 2 to 4 p.m., there will be a one time class called Intent to Deceive, which focuses on fakes and forgeries in the art world. Doesn't that sound cool? On April 28 from 2 to 4 p.m., you can attend Andy Warhol and Pop Art, which is the class we'll be trying out. These classes included gallery tours and time in the studio, too. They are just $10 per child for member and $12 per child for non-members (and an adult needs to stay, as well). To register for any of these classes, just visit the museum's website. It's super easy!

If you can't make any of these special homeschooling classes, remember to check out the museum's calendar for family workshops and other fun offerings that you may want to try. I'm so glad that there are venues like the Oklahoma City Museum of Art that provide such great opportunities for our kids and am really looking forward to our class!
